Highland View Academy (Hagerstown, Md.) hosted an online music festival and virtual academy days from…
By Renee L. Humphreys, Ed.D., Associate Superintendent of Schools, Chesapeake Conference
Welcome to another great school year! As an educator, I have written many essential questions that my students would seek to answer. I believe that an essential question many have asked recently is, “Will Chesapeake Conference schools stand strong despite the challenges presented in 2020?” The answer is, “Yes, we are standing strong as we move forward by faith, trusting in God.”
We are blessed to have 10 outstanding schools across our conference, with nearly 940 students from preschool to twelfth grade. We are so thankful for our approximately 100 exceptional and dedicated educational personnel who faithfully serve our scholars each day. School is off to a noteworthy start! Presently, six of our schools provide instruction in person, three are instructing virtually and one is offering hybrid instruction.
With ongoing support from school personnel, board members, pastors, and church members, schools have been collaboratively preparing and praying together to help meet the needs and concerns of parents, students and staff. A re-entry plan was carefully developed by each school, following CDC, state and local guidelines, to help provide for safe learning spaces. It has taken many hours of preparation, creativity and focus to make sure that adjustments and proper protocols have been put in place. We will keep working together to care for our students and staff as we continue to provide Christ-centered, mission-driven and educationally strong schools.
We continue to do all that we can for our students who are all His children. Things are different for them also this school year, but we are proud of the ways in which they are making adjustments and are still engaging in meaningful learning experiences each day.
Recently some of our Chesapeake scholars responded to the essential question, “Why are you thankful for your school?” The following are their responses:
- “It has very good teachers.” –Aidan
- “It’s the only school I feel happy in.” –Anny
- “It gives me a chance to do all my schoolwork, with God being integrated in my work.” –Emma
- “I get to see all my friends and learn a lot at the same time.” –Cayden
- “My teachers try their best for me to learn everything I need to know and are always there to help me when I don’t understand something.” –Alex
- “Because it is so nice!” –Emmett
- “Because I can be with my friends!” –Matthew
- “I love my friends and my teacher!” –Hazel and Fredy
Their answers remind us that Adventist Education is still essential.
If you still have questions as to whether or not your child should be a part of the Chesapeake Conference’s school family, feel free to contact us at the Education Department, and we will connect you to the school nearest you. We also welcome financial contributions to help provide scholarships and educational needs for our students and schools. There is no better time than this time to support Adventist education. Thank you for partnering with us.
