Highland View Academy hosts annual middle school basketball tournament

Seven schools participated in the tournament from Feb. 2-4.

More than 100 middle school students from seven schools in the Chesapeake and Potomac conferences gathered at Highland View Academy in Hagerstown, Maryland, for the annual Tartan Invitational Middle School Basketball Tournament from Feb. 2-4.

The weekend-long tournament featured five girls’ teams and seven boys’ teams from Atholton Adventist Academy, Dover First Christian School, Frederick Adventist Academy, Manassas Adventist Preparatory School, Mt. Aetna Adventist School, Olney Adventist Preparatory School, and Vienna Adventist Academy.

Beyond the excitement of the games on Friday afternoon, Saturday night, and Sunday morning, the event also featured a strong spiritual focus. The academy hosted a dynamic worship service on Sabbath morning and engaging vesper programs to mark the beginning and end of the Sabbath hours. Teams also gathered for worship and prayer before the start of each day’s games.

Student-athletes also had the opportunity to put their faith into action through community service. In an act of compassion and teamwork off the court, the teams came together to assemble 100 care kits, which were donated to the Hope Center, a faith-based shelter in Hagerstown dedicated to helping those experiencing homelessness. This effort was part of Highland View Academy’s initiative to provide a well-rounded weekend that not only sharpened athletic skills but also fostered spiritual growth and social responsibility.

In addition to competitive play and service activities, the visiting student-athletes toured the Highland View Academy campus and stayed in the dormitories, offering a glimpse into academy life and building camaraderie among students from the various schools.
